this week we talk with the first canadian to join us on our show, paula spurr (aka @cowpunkmom). we talk about her life as a preacher’s kid, her rebellious college life, becoming a pastor’s wife, her music, creativity and her unique nickname. we also throw in some legalism, grace along the way.

from her blog:

I am an artist. I am an actor. I am a musician. I am a dancer. I am a lover. I am a writer. I am not very good at any of these things yet, but I continue to do them. Why let mediocrity stop me? The things I’m good at, like rage and laziness, I’d rather stop practicing anyway.

this week we talk with singer, songwriter Ben Thomas of the band so elated. the band recently followed up their Christmas album, “the bewildering light” (released last year via NoiseTrade), with a new self-titled album.

Ben talks about the new album and shares with his story with us and how growing up and listening to “decent music” taught him that God can be found in all types of art, and not just in clean, wholesome “Christian music.”

Influenced by artists such as David Bazan, Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Derek Webb and Bright Eyes, So Elated conjures up music that is both eclectic and unique. Several songs from the new abum have already been chosen for TV/film licensing, including “Strangers”, which was placed on Shatter Records latest compilation disc.

One of our goals this year is to read through the Bible. Thomas, Stewart and I are both working on this – hopefully I’ll do better on this than the weight challenge.

I was challenged to do this once when I was in high school by a former youth pastor who asked us the question, “Do you believe everything in the Bible is true?”

Of course the church youth group answer was always, “Yes.”

“Have you read all of it?”

“Uh, no.”

“Well then how do you know it’s true?”

I got his point. I set out and read the entire book of Scripture over the next couple years. And yet it still amazes me how reading it in a new version or just simply reading the same passage again brings passages alive again and again.

We’re both using the plan offered by YouVersion.com and with their handy website, RSS feeds, Blackberry and iPhone apps – FOR FREE – you can follow along wherever you are.

Who’s with us?

If you join up and follow along – connect with us. Let’s share in the journey together.
